The Basket Weavers 《藤店》

SGD 0.00

Medium: Ink on Rice Paper
Dimensions: 55*66

The craft of rattan weaving is slowly fading from public view. In Tangkak, Johor, Malaysia, an elderly man tends to a small shop, weaving meticulously at a leisurely pace. When the painter struck up a conversation with him, he learned that the artisan had actually learned this craft during his early years in Singapore. As for the paintings, only the main subject is painted in earthy yellow, while the rest is rendered in ink, making the distinction between the main and secondary elements immediately clear. Though the paintings appear to depict two people, they are actually both the artist himself—a rather unique form of self-expression.
